Google buying Motorola could mean that Android just “won” the enterprise market.

Today’s huge news is that Google has purchased Motorola for $12 500 000 000, I wonder what will be the next step of Google and Android.

By buying one of the “dinosaurs” of mobile technology Google is becoming a giant in mobile technology, and will that mean that they plan to align themselves more like Apple? Have total control over both hardware and software? It will be exciting to follow how this will go. Maybe this is just about protecting themselves against even more patent lawsuits.

My own relationship with Motorola is through the Motorola Microtac in the 1989/90. My first GMS phone using a credit card sized SIM card and i thought it was the coolest gadget of all times (still does in a way). Sadly besides being  one of the first phones publicly available here in Norway I can’t say that Motorola has created anything truly great until they created the Xoom Android tablet. The Xoom was the first thing I saw that could closely resemble an “iPad killer”. It hasn’t killed anything yet but it still is a damn good tablet.

I’ve also been working with rugged devices from Motorola/Symbol and  imo they have the best industry standard rugged devices, with one of my favorites the MC 55 that is running Windows Mobile. I’ve created several solutions for these PDA’s, deployed to thousands of people around Europe. It’s tough and reliable.

Wonder what will happen to all the Symbian and Windows Mobile devices they have now? For variety of operating systems it spells bad but Android is the best platform around at the moment that  can satisfy the needs for the secure, rugged enterprise so this could be a  good thing in the long run. And I see a lot of opportunities for Google here to just “take” the enterprise….

Here’s another article from Mashable about the purchase.
