It’s not about mobile web vs. apps

In Norwegian IT news there’s been discussions and articles about the issue of mobile web versus mobile apps lately. It started a while back when head of Opera Software stated that native apps was dead and that web apps with HTML5 would be the dominating and “winning” app platform, of course this was a marketing stunt, a few days later they launched their web app store.

Visma Software has also jumped on this platform vs. platform. So did Software Innovation. I also remember Oracle jumping in whispering something in the lines of that we shouldn’t forget about the “alternative” platforms… JavaME? Mehehe, it’s not even an alternative. Sorry! :)

What they all seems to forget in their eagerness to promote “their own” favourite platform is that it is not a fight for either one! Maybe it’s been blown a bit out of proportions by tabloid needy Computerworld journalists but mobile web and mobile apps will live together for a very long time. In mobile technology time frame: for an eternity! Why I write this? It’s because people and companies that want to reach out on mobile platforms read these article from names that work in big companies, and the big company name carry weight. Anyone that actually work with consumer and enterprise mobility knows that the bigger you are the less you actually know :)

Both technologies are good. Web is good for some things and apps are good for other things. In many cases it will make most sense to have a combination of both. Having “high-profile” IT executives going out in media talking about things they don’t know jack about as a marketing stunt for their own products just adds more insult to injury.

If anybody is listening, and are wondering what to do; take a look at your requirements, look at your specification, analyse your current needs and try to peak a look into what you might need or want in a year or so.Then look at the capabilities of the different platforms, html and mobile web, native development – or maybe your needs point you to reach multiple platforms? When you’ve learned about the platforms, either told by someone you trust or you have learned it “the hard way” and you have your current and future requirements you can decide on what to do.
