It looks like Finnish phone manufacturer Nokia has finally come to their senses and killed off Symbian as the dead beat horse it is.
In a press release from Microsoft they writes that Nokia and Microsoft Announce Plans for a Broad Strategic Partnership to Build a New Global Mobile Ecosystem
As written elsewhere, this is in no doubt both companies trying to gain market shares in the smartmobile market from both Google and Apple. This COULD be good news for both MS and Nokia, even tho the shareholders of Nokia doesn’t quite agree. A mastodon on hardware teaming up with a mastodon on software could become a major force in driving the market.
I think that the biggest issues that lay in front of a successful collaboration between these two companies is their ability to handle change. None of them can be considered to be known for their ability to handle change in the mobile/technology market very well. Things just happen too fast for the two of them to keep up. One solution could be to bring in “The Poppendieck’s” for a lesson in lean and agile :) And if they don’t they should stay out of the head and hang onto the tail and concentrate on the low-end/feature phone market that doesn’t much care about how large a superdupermega AMOLED screen is.
Doing nothing and continue as one larger and slower dinosaur will just make you look stupid, damaging even more than it already has. Windows Phone is great and Nokia make great hardware so they’ve got two out of three necessities to make it work. Please do!
